We arrived in a cold and snowy Fairbanks, Alaska, on March 5 and spent the first night in town. The next morning we met our fellow photography adventure participants and were driven several miles into the suburbs to a charming lodge called “A Taste of Alaska”.
Apparently the winter of 2018 brought more snow to Fairbanks than is typical, so instead of the normally clear nights, our first night at the lodge was overcast and provided no opportunity for aurora viewing. It was probably just as well since we were pretty tired from the previous day’s travels and hadn’t arrived in Fairbanks until almost 1 AM.
Wednesday morning the sun broke through and we had high hopes of aurora sightings that night.
We were not disappointed.
On Thursday morning after a delicious breakfast, we loaded up in the shuttle and moved to our next location, Chena Hot Springs Resort, which is about 50 miles northwest of Fairbanks. One of the things we were able to do was tour the Ice Museum.
On Friday night we were treated to the most spectacular aurora show. It went on for 3 hours.
